How to use Xperia X8 as a Modem

One Thursday night, I am happily surfing the web when the mode light on my B933 router started blinking - yeah right, the connection is down. Now what?

-basic PC/connection troubleshooting - checked
-reported the problem to my ISP (itago natin sa pangalang Smartbro) - checked
-waited in vain for their resolution - checked but still no luck

Since I couldn't wait any longer because I've got work to do, I've finally decided to buy a Sim and a USB dongle from a different ISP (itago natin sa pangalang Globe) for back-up connection. Unfortunately, the USB dongle poorly detected 3g when connected to my desktop computer but worked amazingly well when I inserted the Sim in my phone.

Now, I'm left with no choice but to use my phone as a modem, but how can it be possible? I'm using Sony Ericson X8 and SE PC companion doesn't support that kind of thing. So I've searched around different forums and compiled/followed the following steps in using an android phone as a modem.

1. Download PdaNet from the Android Market in your PC.

PdaNet is a free Tethering application that instantly shares the Internet access of your Android phone with your computer. PdaNet does NOT require root access or hacking your phone's firmware. It works on all Android phones.

(since I've no connection in my desktop PC, I've used my PHONE to download the app to my SD card, connected the phone to my computer, searched for the apk file in the downloads folder and installed the file.)

2. Simply run the installer, follow the instructions and agree to install the drivers you're prompted about on your Windows system.

3. You will also be prompted to connect your phone to your PC with a USB debugging mode. To activate, go to Settings-->Applications-->Development-->USB debugging.

4. Once the PdaNet is installed, turn ON the PdaNet on your phone, then right-click on the system tray icon for PdaNet on your PC and hit "Connect," and you'll be up and running.

Note: If you're residing outside the US, like me, and still having trouble connecting to the internet though PdaNet says that it's connected, just turn off the Google DNS in PdaNet settings. Right click on the PdaNet, hover to settings and untick Google DNS and reconnect.

You can enjoy browsing the Internet on you computer via the Sony Ericsson X8 as a modem. I've used it for almost four days and it worked really well. Bad thing I can't use the phone for calling when it's used for tethering so I just had my modem replaced (out of my own pocket), and I'm merrily surfing/working again.

  2. But the 720p video recording capability at 30fps can be a boon for you with Dual mics for noise-cancellation and stereo sound capture. A front camera serves better for video calling with high speed 3G and Wi-Fi support.
