Mt Tapyas, Coron, Palawan

3/14/2014

Coron is best known for its great lakes, dive spots and beautiful beaches. But aside from that, it boasts one major land attraction, Mt. Tapyas. Mt. Tapyas is the second highest mountain in Coron. It is 210 meters above sea level, just 14 meters higher than Mt. Manalmon in Bulacan.

Last year, typhoon Yolanda devastated some of the tourist attractions in the country. One of which was the beautiful Coron Island and the most visibly damaged was Mount Tapyas.

We visited Mt Tapyas recently and I can say that Coron tourism is now back in business. There are still some visible signs of damage but the trail to Mt Tapyas has been repaired. Unfortunately, the giant cross is no longer there.

We arrived at Coron town in the afternoon, took a late lunch at Lolo Nonoy's food station and rested for a bit. We didn't arranged for a town tour, we just wanted to visit the mountain so we went directly for a short hike to Mt Tapyas. The jump off point was fairly easy to find because there were signages leading to the view deck. You can also ask some locals for direction just to make sure that you're in the right path.

Climbing Mt Tapyas is easy. It's just 700+ steps hike to the top. Concrete stairs were built so people can easily get to the view deck. The climb is not that hard but you will surely catch your breath. So take your time and rest if you feel tired. They've built some resting areas anyway.

The view from the resting areas was beautiful but the view from the summit is even more breathtaking. We climb Mt Tapyas late in the afternoon, just in time to see the sunset.

Mt Tapyas' viewdeck offers breathtaking panoramic view of Coron, its beaches, different islands and peaks. We also explored the other side of the summit and we were able to see a different sight there. The view of the rolling hills covered with brown grasses was such a visual delight.

Climbing Mt Tapyas was such a great experience. We did the hike up the next day too after our Coron Island Hopping tour. So if you're planning to visit Coron soon but still hesitant because of the damages brought by the recent typhoon, don't think twice, it is already safe to go there. Don't miss to do a short hike and catch the sunset at Mt Tapyas.
